» Artists » David Suff

Born in Devon in 1955 David Suff was a student at the Royal College of Art until 1981. Before attending the Royal College of Art in 1978 he taught etching at Leeds University and worked as a printing technician with JC Editions. Suff is mainly concerned with the landscape. He transmits the mood of his subject matter with delicacy and precision; Man's incursion upon his quiet scenes is captured as if the moment has just passed. In his work he often evokes the early twentieth century etchings echoing the size composition and colour. He hand colours his work retaining a soft mysterious charm. He is widely travelled. Having spent some time in Paris at the beginning of 1980 where he made numerous sketches and paintings he went on to Venice later in the year and in 1981 made an extended trip to Egypt. He makes quick annotated sketches of an image that appeals backing them up with photographs and more detailed notes on the condition of light which is of paramount importance in his work. Suff's work has been most recently exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1981-1937 and also at the Hayward Annual Exhibition in 1982 the Railings Gallery in 1983 the Piccadilly Gallery in 1986 Gump's Gallery San Francisco in 1987 and at the Honor Oak Gallery London in 1988. He was also commissioned by the Milk Marketing Board to produce paintings for their 1983 calendar and these have now been presented to the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool. David Suff was awarded the Pimms Prize for the best watercolour at the 1987 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
