Libby was born in Cambridge in 1944 and now lives in Warwickshire where she has a studio. Libby began a full time teaching career in 1967 and has two children. She finished teaching in 1990 and having always been artistic decided to study Fine Art. In 1992 Libby was awarded a Diploma in fine Art by the Mid Warwickshire College. Between 1992 and 1994 she went on to study print making and was awarded another Diploma. As a result of Libby’s endless creative research she has experimented widely and used many different art processes. It was 1995 however that Libby decided to concentrate on using pastels. It did not take long before one of her larger works “Higher Goals” was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1996 and subsequently sold. Libby’s pastels always possess a wonderful surface texture vibrant in colour. She achieves this by building up layers of rich pigment and continuously fixing so as to preserve the areas of colour. Libby then etches into these layers often quite vigorously using various tools as well as her fingers. This process not only produces great definition but also reveals the contrasting colours beneath the surface. Libby’s clever use of surface and mark making produces imaginative and original compositions that are definitely inspiring. Libby works very intuitively one action determining the next. She is not so concerned with preconceived ideas or producing realistic images. An appropriate title may only emerge halfway through working. Much of Libby’s work could be considered as abstract or semi-representational but it is always inspired by keen observation. The finished pastels leave much to the imagination – there is always something new to be discovered.
