Chris Penny
Penny (1947-2001) was born in Blandford Forum, Dorset, and studied at Bournemouth College of Art, 1964-68. His lecturing experience was to include periods at Harrow, Camberwell College of Art and for many years as head of printmaking at Byam Shaw School of Art in north London. Between 1972 and 1979, Penny contributed prints to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He moved to East Anglia in 1979, taking up a fellowship at Norwich School of Art. With Ian Welsh and Patrick Jones, he was included in the John Brinkley Fellows 1981/82 show at the Norwich School gallery.
Penny's reputation as a fine-art printmaker led to limited-edition etchings from several British and American publishing houses. The National Trust, American Express, Eastern Electricity, Phillips Petroleum and a number of Cambridge colleges commissioned images.
His intense figurative work was also about love of the landscape and its light. He was at one and the same time quite traditional in some of his views, but produced very contemporary-looking images.
Chris Penny's reputation became international as he participated in many solo and mixed shows in Europe, America, Japan and Australia. His one-man exhibitions included one at Cambridge Contemporary Art in 1995. He was included in a 1998 group show there of "Cambridge Views", where his meticulously observed depictions of King's College and the Bridge of Sighs were mixed with views of unexpected corners of the city.
Penny's work is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Norwich and Sheffield Universities, Pennsylvania Academy and Philadelphia Public Library. The sultans of Oman and Brunei, the Duchess of Kent, Ludovic Kennedy, Janet Suzman and Bill Wyman are among notable private buyers of his work.
