Figurative Art

Figurative art is a term used to describe artwork, which clearly depicts real objects or is inspired by real objects. Because of this figurative art can be defined as any art that is representational.

The term "figurative art" is also commonly used to describe art that represents the human figure or even the figure of an animal. However, as explained in the above paragraph, this is not a pre-requisite for an artwork to be termed ‘figurative’.

Since the arrival of abstract art the term ‘figurative art’ has been used to refer to many forms of modern art that bear a strong relationship to the real world.
