This tranquil and contemplative artwork draws the viewer into its inky depths. The flowers and plants of the garden are represented by a riot of colour exploding softly from the darkness, their vibrancy echoing the healing process. Instead of giving the composition a gloomy and sinister aspect, McLean's use of black seems to make the leaves and flowers glow jewel-like from the surface. McLean took inspiration from his own gardens in Barnes and Menorca.
